With thousands of shows to choose from across each streaming platform, it can be boring and time-consuming to look for new TV shows to watch Many of us just stick to the few we’ve seen and know that we like, but no matter how much we love a show, you can only rewatch it so many times.
If you have time on your hands and are looking for a new show to start, try considering one that aligns with your personality type. By intentionally picking one based on what you naturally like, you can make sure you find shows that are worth your time.
At Crystal, we use a framework called DISC to help people better understand themselves. DISC classifies personalities into a few categories we refer to as D (dominance), I (influence), S (steadiness), and C (conscientiousness).
By categorizing personalities in this way, we can easily learn more about ourselves and what we naturally tend to like. For example, a warm, peace-seeking S-type (supportive and people-oriented) is less likely to enjoy a movie that involves intense, adrenaline-inducing situations, than a high-energy, competitive D-type. Focused, straightforward D-types are likely to enjoy more fast-paced television. They tend to enjoy blunt comedy, as well as intense, action-packed shows. However, it’s important that the shows are very dynamic and plot-driven or D-types may lose interest quickly.

Because I-types are naturally energetic and excitable, they are likely to enjoy more upbeat, lighthearted shows that make them laugh. Shorter, character-driven shows tend to keep I-types engaged and entertained more than longer, drawn-out plots. They should look for shows that convey a sense of optimism and creativity.

Longer-running, character-focused shows are good for people-oriented, patient S-types. They’re likely to enjoy getting to know each character over a longer period of time and investing in one show until it’s finished, rather than taking on many new shows at once. S-types should try finding a show that helps them relax and unwind.

Logical, detail-oriented C-types may be fairly patient with a slower-paced show. They tend to seek a problem to solve or something to figure out, so they’re able to put their mind to the test. C-types are likely to enjoy dystopian, fantasy, or mystery shows that challenge their thinking.

True Detective (2014)
Twin Peaks (1990)
